Now that we all know Star Lord, Rocket and Baby Groot, the band of misfits can flex their box office muscles.

The Walt Disney Co. validated "Guardians", too, by moving it to the first weekend in May, the start of the lucrative summer movie season.

In an interview to Fox News, David Hollis, distribution chief for Disney, said, "We spent a lot of time looking at sequels and the idea of sequel-itis". "This is such a fresh and exciting film ... it's the kind of event that gets people excited about going to theaters".

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2". Sovereign high priestess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) looks to Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) former Ravenger buddies to locate and return the Guardians to her for punishment.

Gunn finished the post by confirming that he will spend the next three years developing a third "Guardians" film. "Vol. 2" beat the original "Guardians of the Galaxy" box office debut by about $50 million.

Back in March, box office analysts predicted a $160 million box office opening weekend for Guardians 2, but it came in slightly under those projections. The DreamWorks animation made $6.2 million domestically, taking its U.S. total to $156 million.

The superhero film, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Vin Diesel, has earned $145 million (£111.7 million) to take the number one spot. But it's not just there: 80% of tickets to the film in Germany were for 3D as well.

Now the rag-tag group of heroes has entered the public consciousness.

The original was a surprise success, featuring a cast of lesser-known Marvel characters defending the galaxy. If it does, it will be one of only eight movies to ever hit that mark.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" premiered in Tokyo on April 10, 2017 and was released in the United States on May 5, 2017, in 3D and IMAX 3D. A fun adventurous journey, the film was made with a budget of $200 million. In March, the mouse house's Beauty and the Beast live action adaptation began its box office run with $174.7 million and eventually grossed $1 billion worldwide.

"The Fate of the Furious" from Universal Pictures dropped to second place in its fourth week with $8.5 million. And as per industry reports, the worldwide box office collections have reached $167 million as of Thursday, May 4.

The Guardians has been ranked fifth as far as the biggest opener for a Marvel movie is concerned. The new release is a thriller toplined by Richard Gere and Laura Linney, adapted from the Dutch novel of same name by Herman Koch about two couples with family issues.

The Weinstein Co.'s TG (transgender) drama 3 Generations bombed in its debut, grossing $20,100 from theaters for a theater average of $3,353.
