"Pure Imagination" wasn't enough to convince the Tony nominators to recognize the Christian Borle-led Broadway production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
There is a good deal more uncertainty this year. In addition, "Natasha" cast members Denee Benton, who plays Natasha, and Josh Groban, who portrays Pierre, both making their Broadway debuts, were nominated as best actress and actor in a musical. Platt, the star of Dear Evan Hansen, with songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the recent Oscar winners for "City of Stars" from the movie La La Land, is a shoo-in for a nomination for best actor in a musical.
The married co-creators of "Come From Away" were celebrating their six-year-journey from Gander, N.L., to the bright lights of Broadway on Tuesday as their uplifting, made-in-Canada theatrical production scored seven Tony Awards nominations, including a nod for best musical.
The other new musicals in the category, however, can't be counted out.

"Come From Away" has had its fair share of high-profile attendees in the audience since its Broadway opening.
Select nominations for the 2017 Tony Awards, announced Tuesday.
Though conventional wisdom would suggest smash hit musical Dear Evan Hansen is still the likely frontrunner for Best Musical, with Great Comet scoring substantial support in technical categories the race may be closer than expected.
The play category is even harder to call.
Best Play: "A Doll's House, Part 2", "Indecent", "Oslo", "Sweat".
The Grammy victor will be competing with Patti Lupone, the non-Jewish Broadway veteran who was nominated for playing Jewish cosmetics maven Helena Rubenstein in "War Paint". Oslo "tells the surprising true story of the back-channel talks, unlikely friendships and quiet heroics that led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords between the Israelis and Palestinians".
An August Wilson revival and a new play directed by former Intiman artistic director Bartlett Sher are among this year's Tony nominees. And new musicals are still a terrifying gamble.
Best Revival of a Musical: "Falsettos", "Hello, Dolly!".
But I'm encouraged by the risks producers seem willing to take these days.
Play: "A Doll's House Part 2" by Lucas Hnath, "Indecent" by Paula Vogel, "Oslo" by J.T. Rogers, and "Sweat" by Lynn Nottage.
Kevin Kline earned a nomination in Noel Coward's 1939 farce "Present Laughter", about an egomaniacal matinee idol. Still after the morning it had, Doll's House may just surprise everyone a grab the crown this year. That nominee, Denis Jones, directed and choreographed the new production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" that is now at the Goodspeed.
"Come From Away", which had its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in May 2015 and then moved to Broadway, received seven Tony Award nominations.
Meanwhile, the acting categories, which are always full to bursting with established brilliance, are also crammed with bright newcomers.
